He is an advanced laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgeon, which is known as ‘minimally invasive surgery’ as it involves smaller scars, less post-operative pain and a faster recovery for the patients when compared to older surgical techniques such as ‘open surgery’.
Areas of Research Interest:
Advanced laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery; Laparoscopic abdominal wall reconstruction; complex hernia surgery; needlescopic and robotic surgery; endocrine and minimally invasive surgery; and endoscopy.
Prof Berney is a highly qualified minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) specialist and renowned international hernia surgeon with over 30+ years of medical and surgical experience, with 20+ years dedicated to the field of hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction.
With more than 7,500+ surgical procedures performed using the techniques that he has refined over his career, his patients enjoy outstanding results with very high long-term satisfaction index and improved quality-of-Life.
With over 2,000+ cases recorded in the NHI database, Prof Berney has the world largest collection of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs, using the safest and non-traumatic fibrin glue for mesh fixation. The main advantages (compared to stapled mesh fixation) of this technique include no risk of vascular, nerve, or bladder injuries; significantly reduced incidence of acute postoperative or chronic groin pain, and reduced hernia recurrence rate that is <1%.
Prof Berney has outstanding results that have been largely published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at various international conferences and meetings.
